The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (鈥淐ares Act鈥�) was signed into law by President Trump on March 27, 2020. The Act provides funds to colleges to give to eligible students to assist with costs related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus.  

• Students enrolled in a traditional, face-to-face degree program as of March 13, 2020.
• Students making satisfactory academic progress toward a degree at LSUA.
• Students who have completed a FAFSA and eligible to receive federal Title IV financial aid; or
• Eligible to submit a FAFSA, but has not yet done so for the 2019-2020 award year.

Each eligible student will receive a base award of $200.00.  Those students who receive federal Pell grants will receive an additional amount that is based on credit hours and the amount of total Pell received.  The maximum total award is $1050.00

Each institution received a total amount of funding based on several factors determined by the Department of Education.  Each institution is then subsequently responsible for determining individual award amounts for their students.  LSUA鈥檚 formula is based on the eligibility requirements outlined above coupled with the total amount of federal aid that each student receives.

The Department of Education set forth guidelines that must be followed when awarding CARES Act funding.  One of these requirements states that funding must go to students who transitions from an on-campus, face-to-face program to an online program.  Students already enrolled in an online program as of March 13, 2020 are not eligible.  These requirements are set at the federal level 鈥� not institution.

LSUA will begin disbursing awards on May 12, 2020.  It may take up to three weeks to receive your award.

No. These are emergency grant funds awarded by the federal Department of Education. These dollars are directly awarded to each student and will not have to be paid back.

Yes.  These funds will be awarded and disbursed to each student who is eligible, regardless of whether or not they owe a balance to the university.  You may choose to use these dollars to pay your outstanding balance and can do so through Self-Service or contacting the Accounting Office at (318) 473-6407.

Yes, however, you should submit a FAFSA as soon as possible.  The deadline for submission is June 1, 2020.  Any student submitting their 2019-2020 FAFSA after June 1, 2020, will not be eligible.  Please note that funds will not be disbursed until a completed FAFSA is received and student is deemed eligible for Title IV funding by the Department of Education.
